Trinity Academy Halifax – Instead of many sample lesson

Instead of many sample lesson plans for different subjects, all distance learning classes are planned on a simple model that students can learn from while studying at home. It is very important that students have access to the full curriculum, but we understand that for some students it can be difficult to complete five full hours in one day without the structure and support normally available at school. This means that students have easy access to resources and can take distance learning courses without much difficulty, and can easily return to school life when they return. While distance learning will continue to develop and evolve in the coming months, the above measures have allowed us to facilitate access to a comprehensive program at home, while ensuring that students feel adequately supported and challenged. At the Trinity Academy in Halifax we developed our Distance Learning Program to make our students feel adequately supported. In all disciplines, our students are introduced to knowledge organizers and Big Picture materials to provide them with the basic knowledge and stories they need to access the curriculum. As we continue to focus on returning to the “new norm” in the classroom, it is important that we are able to guide students so that they do not take up too much time or interfere with their learning. In all the decisions we have made about our distance learning program, we have tried to ensure that students have the same experience in all subjects, whether they are isolated or not. The department has published a number of resources, including best practice guides, webinars, and annotated lesson plans, to assist teachers and distance learning providers during the coronavirus outbreak. Providing quality education to students without them in the classroom was an issue that few teachers would consider important twelve months ago. Finally, we carefully considered the amount of work that students receive in each distance learning classroom. Our excellent pastoral team is in contact with students at home to support them and ensure they have access to work. With knowledge organizers as a point of reference, students also have an accessible and concrete source of knowledge that is more sustained and less overloaded than if it were free online. As distance learning becomes an increasingly important aspect of school life, Alex shares the priorities of his school when it comes to creating a distance learning program. Although our return to school was incredibly welcome, schools should continue to prepare for the “worst-case scenario” while students remain isolated at home.
