We see students with iPads going to high school and they joined the group’s program,” Coyne said. Although Sanders has a choir and an Orff band, Florida-Pasco County schools traditionally begin studying the instruments of a concert band in high school, McCorkle said. The iPad band and music technology classes have inspired students to create music in high school and beyond. “STEAM is not just science, technology, engineering and math, it’s an art in all of these disciplines,” said Ryan McCorkle, one of the music program’s teachers. “There are children who never liked music, but now they play or record on their iPad,” “he” said. “Music on the radio is usually based on technology,” McCorkle said, noting synthesizers and mixers are more common in modern commercial music than wooden winds. For Petry, STEAM’s approach to music is linked toits’ primary goal of engaging students and providing them with learning opportunities. “During one of our concerts, our iPad group performed, our choir performed and our art department was engaged in live art,” Coyne says. In 2015, “she” graduated from Northwestern University, where “she” played saxophone with the Wildcat March Orchestra for four years and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Association.
